BEFORE USING THE GATE:

  1. Ensure that all users are aware of the following safety precautions.Keep all body parts out from between gate rails when opening and closing the gate.
    1. Keep all body parts away from the chain, sprocket, and spring when opening and closing the gate.
  2. Ensure that there are no overhead power lines.
  3. Ensure that you have adequate clearance from other overhead objects such as tree limbs. In the open position, the gate will stand approximately 16 feet high.

OPENING THE GATE:

  1. Grab the handle under the bottom rail and lift upward.

CLOSING THE GATE:

  1. Grab the handle under the bottom rail and pull downward.

MAINTAINING THE GATE:

  1. Apply lubricant to the sprocket axle and chain every six months or as needed based on conditions and usage.
  2. Apply exterior, rust resistance paint promptly to any chips or areas of exposed steel.
  3. Ensure that base attachment bolts are secure one week and one month after installation and every three months thereafter.

LOCKING THE GATE:

  1. If your gate has a bracket that hangs from the vertical post: Swing the unattached end of the bracket over to the peg on the top rail.
    1. Insert the peg through the hole in the bracket.
    1. Insert a padlock of your choice through the hole in the peg.
  2. If your gate has a chain that hangs from the vertical post:Swing the unattached end of the chain up to the peg on the top rail.
    1. Insert the peg through a link on the chain.
    1. Insert a padlock of your choice through the hole in the peg.

ADJUSTING THE GATE:

  1. Safety equipment should be worn during adjustments of your KEG gate, including protective helmet, gloves, boots, and goggles.
  2. Determine if an increase in spring and chain tension is necessary by opening the gate. If the gate opens (gate up) easily with only minor manual assistance, then the turnbuckle does not need to be tightened.
    1. If the gate is difficult to open or requires excessive manual assistance, then the turnbuckle needs tightened to increase spring and chain tension.
  3. Determine if a decrease in chain tension is necessary by closing the gate.If the gate closes (gate down) easily with only minor manual assistance, then the turnbuckles does not need to be loosened.
    1. If the gate is difficult to close or requires excessive manual assistance, then the turnbuckle needs loosened to decrease spring and chain tension.
  4. Typically, four to seven threads of each of the turnbuckle’s bolts are visible inside the central portion of the turnbuckle at initial set-up.
  5. Adjustments are typically necessary at initial set-up, as well as periodically for the first few weeks while the spring stretches into position and occasionally thereafter.
  6. If an adjustment is necessary, then open the gate fully (gate up) and have it held in that position. Before and during any adjustment of the turnbuckle, insert a common flat-blade screwdriver into the gap of the connecting link between the chain and turnbuckle to prevent rotational torque on the chain while turning the turnbuckle.
    1. Use a wrench or channellock pliers to rotate the turnbuckle.Rotate the central portion of the turnbuckle in a clockwise direction in order to tighten the tension on the spring and chain.
      1. Rotate the central portion of the turnbuckle in a  counterclockwise direction in order to loosen the tension on the spring and chain.
    1. The turnbuckle’s center portion should be turned a half of a rotation (180 degrees), and then the gate should be retested to see if further adjustments are necessary.

ATTACHING AN AUTOMATIC OPENER:

  1. Safety equipment should be worn during adjustments of your KEG gate, including protective helmet, gloves, boots, and goggles.
  2. Ensure that the gate turnbuckle tension is properly adjusted.
  3. Ensure that the opener is capable of vertically lifting and holding the weight of the gate.
  4. Follow the gate opener manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Attach the automatic opener to the top plate of the gate’s vertical post using the open “J” hook and to the pair of rounded steel tabs on the top of the top rail. The open “J” hook permits removal and manual opening during a power outage or mechanical failure of the opener.
  6. Attach a power source and any desired control option per the manufacturer’s instructions.

CONVERTING TO A SWING GATE

  1. KEG gates that are installed using the ground attachment anchor can be converted to swing gates if needed. If a KEG gate is attached directly to a concrete roadway, then it cannot be converted to a swing gate. If the pivot points of the gate are damaged, such that the gate cannot be opened vertically, then the ground anchored KEG gate can be converted to a swing gate in such an emergency.
  2. Remove the set screw on the ground attachment anchor. The set screw is on the side of the ground anchor opposite the gate.
  3. Remove the single nut and bolt that extends through the cylinder portion of the ground attachment anchor.
  4. The gate should now be able to be opened by rotating horizontally. This functionality is meant only as a temporary means of opening and closing the gate, until it can be repaired or replaced.
